Factors Driving the Adoption of Solar Energy

Energy generation from solar panels is becoming more popular in the UK, owing to the country’s suitable geographic location and the strides made in solar technology. While the UK may not have the same sunny climate as some countries, it still has excellent solar potential due to a combination of climatic and geographical factors.

The UK climate is typically cloudy, but this does not rule out energy generation from solar panels. It may take more time for panels to generate electricity in the UK than in sunnier countries, but they can still produce electricity in cloudy weather. Moreover, solar panels have become increasingly efficient, better equipped to generate energy in sub-optimal conditions.

Another factor contributing to the UK’s solar potential is its latitude. The UK is located between 50.64 and 60.86 degrees north, and this geographic location means that during summer, sunlight can reach up to 16 hours a day. This is because the country is exposed to more sunlight during the summer months when the sun is nearer and less exposure when it is farther in the winter months. The UK government is continuing to introduce policies that foster solar energy adoption. In 2021, the green-hued budget allocated £12 billion for the Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, which aims to boost the country’s transition to renewable energy. This budget includes an additional £68 million in funding to extend the renewable energy grant until March 2022.
